拍品描述
China for the Japanese market, circa 17th-18th century. Finely modeled in the form of a wooden bucket, the broad cylindrical vessel set with a handle composed of two rectangular tabs joined by a stretcher. The exterior painted in underglaze cobalt blue on a clear white glaze, to depict a continuous scene of crashing waves with numerous swallows soaring above the turbulent waters, which extend onto the handle. The interior base further decorated with an additional bird in flight above reeds and verdant grasses.Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Excellent condition with only minor wear and firing-inherent irregularities, including light pitting and occasional dark spots.Weight: 651.9 gDimensions: Height 17.8 cm, Diameter 12.9 cmAs imperial patronage at the kilns of Jingdezhen diminished during the seventeenth century, Chinese potters sought alternative markets abroad. Among these, Japan emerged as a significant destination, where the flourishing practice of the tea ceremony stimulated demand for imported ceramics. The present porcelain jar, designed to hold water for the tea gathering, is modeled on the form of a modest wooden bucket, a deliberate combination of high and low that appealed to Japanese patrons by resonating with their aesthetic sensibilities. The uneven thickness of the glaze and occasional exposure of the clay beneath in some of these wares would have been considered defects in China, but they were prized in Japan for capturing a sense of authenticity.Literature comparison:Compare a related blue and white porcelain freshwater jar, Ming dynasty, 17th century, 26 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 2013.982a-c.
