Japan, Saga Prefecture, Karatsu kilns, late 16th to early 17th century. Thickly potted, the cylindrical body with gently concave sides, fitted with a pair of small, shell-shaped handles, tapering toward the short, straight foot and rising to a wide, circular mouth, covered with a black-lacquered wooden lid topped with a slender, curved handle. The surface covered overall in an ash-brown glaze, incised with a central band of scattered prunus blossoms, framed above and below by wave-like motifs in creamy tones encircling the vessel. (2)Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Very good condition with surface wear and firing-inherent irregularities, such as light pitting, fine intentional glaze crackling, and small firing hairlines. Minor traces of use. The cover with small losses to the lacquer around the edges, scattered minute nicks, and shallow surface scratches, mostly to the underside.Weight: 1,634 gDimensions: Height 18.3 cm, Diameter 20.1 cmKaratsu ware is a type of Japanese ceramics produced in and around Karatsu, Saga Prefecture, in the island of Kyushu, which became an important center of foreign trade as well as a hub of ceramic production from the Azuchi-Momoyama period onward. It was in this region that Korean potters first introduced the 'noborigama', or climbing kiln, to Japan in the late sixteenth century, an innovation that allowed greater control during firing and enabled the production of more refined ceramics. The techniques they brought to Karatsu kiln sites also played a crucial role in the development of porcelain production in Japan in the early seventeenth century.Although Karatsu ware was originally created for everyday use, including tableware, jars, and other household items, its characteristic austere aesthetic came to be particularly valued by practitioners of the tea ceremony during the Momoyama period. Literature comparison:Compare a related Yatsushiro ware tea ceremony water jar, Edo period, 18th century, 22.2 cm diameter, in the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art, accession number F1900.31a-b.
