Early 'Ko?Kutani' pieces are celebrated for their bold, richly colored overglaze enamels using the five vivid hues known as gosai (red, yellow, green, purple, and blue), and for their dynamic, elaborate designs. Production ceased in the early 18th century and was later revived in the early 19th century, leading to a diversity of regional styles and techniques. Kutani ware became internationally known through exhibitions in the 19th century and today remains a highly regarded traditional craft of Japan.
