拍品描述
China, 17th century. Well-potted, the globular body gently tapering toward a hexagonal foot, with high, rounded shoulders rising to a similarly shaped mouth. The vessel fitted on either side with an over-arched square handle and a narrow, upturned spout, and topped with a slightly domed cover with a cylindrical, subtly waisted finial. The exterior decorated in underglaze cobalt blue on a clear white ground with a pair of opposing oval panels depicting natural scenes, each containing a small bird perched on a luxuriant tree branch amidst rocky landscapes, with the sun illuminating the distance. The panels interspersed with leafy prunus sprays, while the upper rim encircled by bands of geometric patterns. The handle, spout, and cover further adorned with stylized swirling clouds and lotus blossoms among scrolling tendrils.Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Good condition with surface wear and firing-inherent irregularities, including light pitting, scattered dark spots, and kiln grit to the base. Evidence of breakage to the handle with subsequent signs of restoration. Light traces of usage to the interior. Few minor nicks and shallow surface scratches.Weight: 1,566 gDimensions: Height 26.3 cmBy the early seventeenth century, the Ming dynasty was faltering under both internal unrest and external threats from the rising Manchu power. After the death of the Wanli Emperor in 1620, imperial patronage of the Jingdezhen kilns declined sharply, leaving potters to rely on private enterprise. This shift ushered in what is now known as the 'Transitional period' (c. 1620-1683), a time of great creativity and experimentation in porcelain production. Freed from the rigid demands of the court, artisans diversified their output for new patrons at home, including scholars and wealthy urban collectors, as well as for lucrative export markets in Japan, Europe, and beyond. In this context of political turbulence but artistic freedom, the ceramics of the Transitional period stand out as some of the most innovative and dynamic in Chinese history.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Sotheby's London, 7 November 2025, lot 922Price: GBP 6,350 or approx.
