These wares were characterized by the use of painted enamels enriched with applied gold ornamentation. The predominant enamel was a tomato red derived from iron oxide, which typically fires to a slightly brownish hue, with a matte surface and an inherently fragile character. The decorative vocabulary was commonly composed of shaped medallions incorporating lozenge and trellis motifs, often arranged in rhythmic and highly ordered compositions. While red grounds predominated, kinrande wares were occasionally produced with alternative ground colors, including pale green, faint yellow, and dark violet.Kinrande porcelains were produced primarily for export, notably to Japan and the Islamic world. Their reception was particularly enthusiastic in Japan, where their ornamental language, closely related to contemporary textile patterns, resonated strongly with established aesthetic sensibilities. The refined elegance and sophisticated silhouettes of these vessels made them especially prized by tea masters, who functioned as the principal arbiters of taste within the archipelago. In marked contrast to the restrained rusticity of native ceramic traditions, kinrande wares introduced a sense of exoticism and luxury into the context of the tea ceremony. As a result, these objects were carefully preserved, transmitted across generations, and esteemed as remarkable treasures.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related Kinrande ware ewer in the form of a dancing lady, Ming dynasty, 1522-1600, 31.8 cm high, in the British Museum, registration number PDF.704.
