China, 1573-1620. The deep, straight sides of the vessel supported on a slightly tapered foot with a recessed base, rising to an everted, lobed rim. The interior decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a central medallion enclosing a scholar in loose-fitting robes before a coastal landscape. The tall cavetto adorned with distinctively shaped panels containing blossoming flowers, above which a continuous frieze of natural landscapes with small houses nestled among lush trees encircles the rim. The exterior further decorated with panels bearing floral motifs. The underside with a four-character underglaze blue mark enclosed within a square, double-lined border.Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Excellent condition with only minor wear, expected firing-inherent irregularities, and light traces of use to the interior.Weight: 741.3 gDimensions: Height 9.9 cm, Diameter 19.4 cm'Kraak' porcelain belongs to the corpus of Chinese export wares produced during the first half of the 17th century. Its name derives from the Dutch term 'kraak', which refers to the Portuguese ship type 'caracca', employed to transport goods from the Far East to Europe. From 1602 onward, the export and distribution of Chinese porcelain were conducted not by the Portuguese but by the Dutch East India Company. In 17th-century Holland, deep bowls or dishes with a flat rim were termed 'klapmutsen', as when inverted they evoked the form of a cap or hat with a brim. This typology, derived from the Chinese deep bowl, was particularly favored in the Netherlands, where it accommodated European culinary conventions for soups and stews. See Eva Str?ber, La maladie de porcelaine… Ostasiatisches Porzellan aus der Sammlung Augusts des Starken, 2001, p. 22.Literature comparison:Compare a related underglaze blue and white 'kraak' porcelain charger, Ming dynasty, Wanli period, 1573-1619, 21.6 cm diameter, in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, inventory number PO 929.
