拍品描述
DYNASTY, CHONGZHEN PERIODChina, Jingdezhen kilns, c. 1643. Finely potted, of circular form, with deep, rounded sides gently tapering towards a short foot with a recessed base, fitted with a slightly domed cover. The exterior painted overall in two shades of underglaze cobalt blue, decorated with a dense, wave-like ground overlaid with large five-petalled prunus blossoms. The interior and the underside left undecorated, covered with a clear white glaze.Provenance: Hatcher Collection, Christie's Amsterdam, 14 March 1984. The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France, acquired from the above.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, expected firing-inherent irregularities, including a small pit to the cover, and few minuscule chips along the foot rim.Weight: 42.3 gDimensions: Height 3.2 cm, Diameter 4.7 cmThe present porcelain box was recovered among some 25,000 vessels found on the wreck of an unidentified Asian ship in the South China Sea. This ship is known as the 'Hatcher cargo' after Captain Michael Hatcher who discovered her in 1983. There is no written record testifying to the exact year of its sinking, but the covers of two oviform jars inscribed in underglaze blue with a cyclical date corresponding to 1643 make fairly precise dating of the wreck possible. The cargo primarily consisted of two types of blue-and-white porcelain made at Jingdezhen at the end of the Ming dynasty: late variations of 'kraak' ware and examples of a 'transitional' style characterized by landscape motifs and naturalistic plants and birds. The ship may have been on its way to Indonesia, carrying also spices, silk and other commodities for sale to the Dutch whose East India Company had offices in Batavia (present-day Jakarta). Chinese junks sailing to Batavia or Bantam varied in size from 200 to 800 tons. The journey out was made over three weeks during December and January and the return trip took place in June and July.Literature comparison:Compare a pair of nearly identical underglaze blue porcelain boxes with wave-like patterned decoration, Ming dynasty, Chongzen period, c. 1643, 4.8 cm diameter (each), in the British Museum, registration number 1984,0303.15.a-b.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's Amsterdam, 3 May 2005, lot 13Price: EUR 3,360 or approx. EUR 5,000 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing : Eight blue and white 'Hatcher cargo' small circular boxes and covers, c. 1640Expert remark: Compare the closely related underglaze blue and white porcelain box with nearly identical wave-like decoration. Note that the lot comprises eight porcelain items of similar sizes (3.5 to 5.5 cm) with different decorative schemes.
