拍品描述
China, c. 1300-1050 BC. Of arc-shaped form, finely carved as a highly stylized dragon shown in profile, with its forelegs tucked beneath the body. The creature decorated on both sides with distinctive scrollwork in high relief, its body extending into a curved tail and a short snout, whose head is defined by a pair of large circular eyes and a small aperture for suspension. The smoothly polished stone covered overall with extensive areas of opaque, creamy-white calcification, through which the translucent celadon tone of the original stone remains visible in certain areas.Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age, with surface wear and inherent natural imperfections. Distinct traces of weathering and erosion. Few minute nicks and shallow surface scratches. The stone surface, extensively altered, with small areas of soil encrustation, consistent with a prolonged period of burial.Weight: 24.6 gDimensions: Length 8.3 cmIn his book 'The Language of Adornment' Filippo Salviati writes: during the late Shang period personal adornment regained its significance, as evidenced by the hundreds of ornaments in bone and jade found in the tomb of Fu Hao at Anyang. Most were in the form of animals drawn both from nature, such as the fish, and from mythology, like the dragon.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related 'dragon' jade pendant, Shang dynasty, 15th-10th century BC, 6.9 cm long, in the British Museum, registration number 2022,3034.87.
