拍品描述
A SMALL WHITE JADE 'HUMANOID AND ANIMAL' PENDANT, LATE SHANG TO EARLY WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTYChina, c. 12th-10th century BC. The flattened plaque, of elongated form with irregular contours, finely carved on both sides to depict a crouching humanoid figure in profile, interspersed with a pair of highly stylized animal heads, each carefully incised with distinctive double-line outlines. The top of the pendant with a small circular aperture drilled from one side for suspension. The smoothly polished, translucent stone of a greenish-white tone with cloudy inclusions and creamy-white mottling throughout.Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and natural age-related imperfections. Occasional minute nicks and shallow surface scratches. Weight: 17.9 gDimensions: Length 7.5 cmThe late Shang dynasty period saw a revolutionary change in aesthetic style in ritual bronzes and jades. Among the novelties were jade plaques decorated with humanoid motifs, such as a pendant in the form of a crowned human with bent limbs unearthed from the tomb of Fu Hao (c. 1200?BC), and illustrated in Queen, Mother, General: 40th Anniversary of Excavating the Shang Tomb of Fu Hao, Capital Museum, Beijing, 2016, p.?7.Pendants such as the present example, echoing Shang prototypes with humanoid motifs, likely formed part of ritual necklace sets during the Western Zhou dynasty. An elaborate set, including a related jade plaque, was excavated from Qiangjiacun, Fufeng, Shaanxi, and is illustrated in the exhibition catalogue The Cultural Grandeur of the Western Zhou Dynasty, National Palace Museum, Taipei, 2014, no.?119.Expert's note: Although a variety of human-animal plaques can be found in public collections across China, few are in private hands and comparatively larger examples such as the present piece are even rarer.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's Hong Kong, 28 November 2018, lot 2743Price: HKD 187,500 or approx.
