拍品描述
China, 18th to 19th century or earlier. Well-potted, the globular body supported on a short, gently tapered foot and surmounted by a waisted neck with an everted rim. The exterior covered overall in a pale celadon 'orange peel' glaze with fine crackling, while the base is left unglazed to reveal the buff-colored ceramic beneath.Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Fair condition with surface wear and firing-inherent irregularities. Small losses and visible chips along the rims. Few minute nicks and faint surface scratches. Weight: 183.2 gDimensions: Height 6.7 cm, Diameter 7.8 cmThe shape of this water pot is inspired by the form known as 'Taibai zun', named after the Tang dynasty poet Li Bai (also Li Taibai, 701-762), who is frequently depicted reclining against a large wine vessel of this design. These vessels are also referred to as 'Jichao zun', owing to their resemblance to a woven chicken coop with a small opening at the top through which chicks are fed. Beehive-shaped water pots of this type are well known in peach bloom glazes, while examples in other monochrome glazes were produced in more limited numbers.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related guan-type pale celadon-glazed water pot, Qing dynasty, 1644-1911, 5.8 cm diameter, in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, Taiwan, accession number 018217N000000000.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Bonhams New York, 21 March 2022, lot 190Price: USD 31,562 or approx. EUR 30,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing: A small Ge-type water coupe, Qing dynastyExpert remark: Compare the related form and color of the similarly crackled glaze. Note the slightly larger size (10.5 cm).
