拍品描述
China, c. 4700-2500 BC. Shaped as three conjoined discs (bi) of progressively smaller size, each pierced at the center with a circular opening and slightly beveled at the edges, the uppermost disc with an additional small aperture drilled from both sides for suspension. The smoothly polished, translucent stone of a pale celadon tone, with cloudy inclusions and scattered speckles of whitish calcification.Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Excellent condition, commensurate with age, with minor surface wear and inherent natural imperfections. Few smoothened nicks and faint surface scratches. The stone with sparse calcified areas.Weight: 20.2 gDimensions: Length 9.3 cmThis type of jade plaque, originally fashioned with only two perforations, is attributed to the Xinkailiu culture (c. 5300-4800 BC) and continued to be produced at later prehistoric sites in Northeast China, including those associated with the Hongshan culture. Closely related to the canonical form of the well-known jade discs (bi), which played a central role in the symbolic and ritual vocabulary of early Chinese societies, the repetition of circular units in this plaque may have reinforced its formal significance, echoing conceptual models of Neolithic cosmology.Literature comparison:Compare a related green and russet jade three-hole disc, late Neolithic period, Hongshan culture, 6.4 cm long, excavated in 1983 from the Niuheliang Site, Nuluerhu valley, Chaoyang city, Liaoning province. Compare a related jade three-hole plaque, late Neolithic period, Hongshan culture, 6.4 cm long, excavated in Fuxin prefecture, Liaoning province, and illustrated in Zhongguo yuqi quanji (Complete collection of Chinese jades), vol. 1, 1991, pl. 7.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely related Auction: Sotheby's Hong Kong, 9 October 2020, lot 35 Price: HKD 226,800 or approx.
