拍品描述

Small jade seal "Bird and turtle", Eastern Han Dynasty Small white jade seal composed of two bodies that are joined together to form a single larger seal. The larger seal has carved on the top the shell of a turtle, which sits on its four legs. The interior of this shell is empty, as is the structure of the seal itself, thus allowing a second piece to fit: a smaller seal with a bird carved on its upper part with a beak, its eyes open and its wings folded over its body. The details such as the small claws of the turtle, the hexagonal patterns of the shell or the wings covered with feathers of the bird, among others, stand out for the meticulousness with which they have been carved. On the base is an engraved seal张龙印玺. In Chinese culture, the turtle has a great symbolism; first of all, it is associated with the creation of the world itself, since it is considered one of the Four Supernatural Creatures, thus associating its shell with the celestial vault or sky, and its flat belly with the earth. Likewise, the turtle symbolizes longevity and strength.Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 AD) Measures: 4,6 x 2,9 x 2,9 cm Weight: 54 g Provenance: - Collection of Tommy Lam, Hong Kong, from 1980.
