Description

Standing in a powerful pose, with an angry bearded face and raised chignon. Dressed in armour and wearing boots, his right arm bent at the hip, his left raised. Beneath his feet, two half-naked demons on a rock-shaped plinth. In Buddhist mythology, the lokapala (‘Guardians of the World’) are the Four Heavenly Kings, each of whom watches over one of the cardinal directions and are usually worshipped in separate halls in Chinese temples. During the Tang dynasty, terracotta figures of them were placed in the tombs of deceased nobles. The present figure is impressive due to its imposing size, dynamic pose and the expressive faces of the angry guardian and the two demons he has defeated. It is believed that the facial features and beards of such figures, which are atypical for China, are modelled on those of West Asians. Certificate Oxford Authentication thermoluminescence test no. C101g59, 5.4.2001
