Description

The Buddha of Infinite Life dressed as a bodhisattva and seated in dhyanasana on a rectangular base borne at the corners by stylised vajra and covered partly with a long cloth centred with a lotus, the hands in dhyana-mudra formerly held the kalasha, the body adorned with jewellery and a five-leafed tiara. Eyes and lips painted. Engraved at the base with the number yiqian wubai qishiwu (1575) and a small incised swastika. The worship of Amitayus, the Buddha of Eternal Life, was believed to ensure long life and rebirth in paradise. He was the most popular Buddha among imperial practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism. The Qing emperors repeatedly gave sets of Buddha as gifts on birthdays and anniversaries of his family. The largest production of Buddhist bronze figures took place under Emperor Qianlong. He presented his mother a total of over 9,000 statues on her 60th and 70th birthdays. On her 80th birthday, she received a group of Amitayus figures inscribed with the date 1770. The exact number, which ran into the thousands, is unknown.
