Description

Consisting of bowls of various shapes and sizes, most with a ‘hare's fur’ stripes, two bowls with a matt rust-brown glaze, one bowl with a monochrome black glaze and the characters ‘wu liu’ engraved on the base. Partially damaged, two bowls with gold lacquer repairs. (12) The dark-glazed stoneware bowls from Jianyang county in Fujian province were highly prized by tea connoisseurs during the Song dynasty (960-1279). The high iron content of their glazes kept the tea hot for a particularly long time, and the white, frothy tea contrasted beautifully with the glazes. Japanese monks who visited the temples on Mount Tianmu in Zhejiang for studies brought numerous examples back to Japan, where they were named “Temmoku” after the mountain and were often used in tea ceremonies. Well-known glaze variations of Jian ware include hare's fur, oil spot, and partridge feather glazes.
