Description

Flower-shaped with an outwardly curved rim and flat centre, covered with an oily greenish-grey glaze interspersed with black and yellow stained crackling. Six raised kiln marks on the base reveal the dark brown stoneware body. Metal mounting around the rim. Repaired broken out area. During the Southern Song and Yuan dynasties, the Ge kiln in southern China produced exquisite ceramics that have always been highly prized by connoisseurs. Alongside the Ru, Guan, Ding and Jun kilns, the Ge kiln is therefore one of the ‘Five Great Kilns’ (Wu daming yao). Most of the Ge ware was always kept in the palace collection. Under Emperor Qianlong, for example, the ‘Hall of Merit and Diligence’ (Maoqin dian) was decorated with Ge ware, where he used to study and engage with his favourite art objects. Some Ge wares found its way onto the Beijing art market at the beginning of the 20th century and from there into Western collections. This dish in the shape of a hibiscus flower is made of dark brown, purple-tinged clay and covered with an opaque greenish-grey glaze, whose two-tone crackle is referred to as ‘iron wire and gold thread’. Fired on a rack rather than a foot ring in the kiln, there are six raised marks from firing supports on the bottom, which are considered a typical feature of Ge ware. Almost identical pieces can be found in the collection of the Palace Museum in Beijing.
