Description

The main field is divided into three by three squares, with the goddess depicted in the centre. The fierce, blue-skinned Kali, adorned with a garland of skulls and a belt of severed arms, stands upon Shiva, who lies on a lotus. Each of the eight surrounding panels repeats a similar composition, featuring a shivalinga at the centre, a burning corpse, and a stupa, accompanied by five deities, worshippers, and a distinct animal, all set against a background of scattered skeletal remains. In the lower register, the donor couple appears, flanked by their three daughters and three sons. Modern mount. Fire damage. In this remarkable painting, the goddess Kali and the shivalinga are shown alongside Buddhist stupas and deities. These combinations, sometimes seen in religious art of Nepal, reflect the historical coexistence and mutual influence of Hindu and Buddhist traditions in the region. The Newar community, particularly in the Kathmandu Valley, played a key role in this syncretism. Such compositions reveal the fluidity of devotional and artistic boundaries, combining elements from both faiths while conveying the lived religious experiences of their makers and viewers.
