Description

The left half of the figure rendered as an oni seated with one leg raised, the other half of a man holding the severed arm of the demon of Rashomon. The wide robe with engraved scrolls. The demon's eye inlaid black, the single horn, which was probably inlaid, missing. he depiction refers to the story of Watanabe no Tsuna and the oni Ibaraki Dōji. When this oni wanted to avenge his master Shuten Dōji at the Rashōmon, he fought Watanabe no Tsuna, who chopped off the demon's forearm and kept it as a trophy. A netsuke with a similar motif in the former W. L. Behrens Collection (No. 3262) shows the left half of the body as an oni (Ibaraki Dōji) with a claw foot and an empty sleeve. The right half of the body is depicted as a woman with the oni’s severed forearm. The woman alludes to Ibaraki Doji’s transformation into the old aunt of Watanabe no Tsuna, who has retrieved her forearm. The reference to the Rashomon story is clear, and Henri Joly comments, ‘Very uncommon treatment of that story’.
