Description

Bent forward and standing on one leg in balance the sennin wears a leaf skirt around his hips from which hangs a gourd, a cord is tied around the neck from which hang fruits, probably loquats (biwa). While the right hand rests on the bent knee, the left hand covers the ear. A loose ball inside his open mouth. The collector commented on this netsuke: ‘Possibly my finest piece of deer antler work.’ Indeed, this piece is a masterpiece of stag antler craftsmanship. The netsuke is carved from the fork in a deer antler, probably from the crown. The marrow cavity has been hollowed out, creating a cord channel that exits through a hole in the upper arm. At the opposite end of the cavity, it was not necessary to plug the porous material. The carver was thoroughly familiar with deer antler and its structure, enabling him to make clever use of the solid, dense areas of the antler and inside of the antler beam.
