Description

Of round shape with a bulbous slightly waisted body, set on a thin foot ring with a carved spiral inside. Covered with a shiny, slightly porous black glaze that leaves parts of the underside and the foot exposed, displaying in white the snow-covered Mount Fuji. Stamped Raku. Silk bag (shifuku). Wooden box, inscribed on the lid: Fuji e kuro chawan Raku Kichizaemon and Raku seal of Ryōnyū; the back of the lid inscribed: Ryōnyū saku kuro chawan Fuji no ga ari and signed Sa with kaō (= Kyūkōsai Shōō Sōsa, 1818—1860, 10th generation tea master of the Omotesenke school). The potter’s seal ‘Raku’ on this chawan is one of the official seals of Ryōnyū (1756—1834), the second son of Chōnyū (1714—1770), who became the 9th head of the Raku family after the resignation due to illness of his elder brother Tokunyū in 1770 at the age of only 14. He used this seal until his retirement in 1811, after his first official seal was destroyed in the great Tenmei fire of Kyoto in 1788.
