Description

Of round shape with vertically rising wall with a wide horizontal groove and evenly undulating rim with five gentle elevations (gogaku), set on a low small foot ring with a carved spiral inside. Completely covered with a very thin slip and a thin cream-coloured glaze with three cloud-shaped pale salmon-red spots, painted with a crane and a young pine sapling (symbols of the new year) in iron-grey. Stamped Raku. Silk bag (shifuku). The potter's seal ‘Raku’ on this chawan is one of the official seals of Tannyū (1795—1854), second son of Ryōnyū (1756—1834), who after the early death of his older brother and the retirement of his father, succeeded him as the 10th head of the Raku family in 1811 and was active until his own retirement in 1845. The evenly undulating rim with five gentle elevations is one of the characteristics of Raku chawan shapes established by the 7th Raku master Chōnyū (1714—1770) and bears the name gogaku (five peaks).
