Description

AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE PALE CELADON AND RUSSET JADE FIGURE OF A MYTHICAL BOVID, PROBABLY WESTERN HAN DYNASTY

China, 207 BC-9 AD or later. Boldly carved as a bovine creature in a recumbent position, its rounded body finely incised with decorative scroll motifs, the spine surmounted by four notches. The powerful head distinguished by prominent bulging eyes and a flat snout with gaping jaws revealing sharp fangs rendered in openwork, crowned with an imposing pair of horns. The tail and underside of the body pierced for suspension. The stone of a yellowish-celadon tone with russet veining, dark speckles, and icy white inclusions.

Provenance: Daniel Milano, Paris, France, 2001. Collection of Paolo Bertuzzi, acquired from the above. A copy of the original stamped and signed certificate of authenticity from D Milano, dated 24 September 2001, dating the present lot to the Western Han dynasty, accompanies this lot. Paolo Bertuzzi (1943-2022) was a fashion stylist from Bologna. He was the son of Enrichetta Bertuzzi, founder of Hettabretz, a noted Italian fashion company with customers such as the Rothschild family, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor. Paolo Bertuzzi later took over his mother’s business and designed exclusive pieces, some of which were exhibited in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA. He was also an avid collector of antiques for more than sixty years. His collection includes both archaic and contemporary art, and he edited two important books about Asian art, Goa Made - An Archaeological Discovery, about a large-scale archaeological project carried out with the Italian and Indonesian governments, and Majapahit, Masterpieces from a Forgotten Kingdom.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age, with ancient wear, natural imperfections, including small fissures, some of which have developed into small hairlines, and distinct traces of weathering. Few minute chips and occasional minor nicks. The surface with a remarkable soft and unctuous texture, most likely the result of centuries of handling and appreciation.
