Description

A CELADON JADE CARVING OF A BUDDHIST LION, LATE MING TO EARLY QING DYNASTY

China, 17th century. Boldly carved as a recumbent lion with its legs tucked beneath and turning its head to the side to look back in an alert expression with bulging eyes, wide snout, and elongated pointy ears, the long spine and bushy tail meticulously incised. The semi-translucent stone of a grayish celadon tone with dark green specks, russet veins, and cloudy inclusions.

Provenance: A private collection in the United Kingdom.
Condition: Good condition with old wear, a smooth unctuous feel, scattered nibbles, a minor smoothened chip to one leg, the stone with natural fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks.
