Description

A CELADON JADE ‘CHILONG AND DUCK’ DOUBLE VASE, LATE MING TO MID-QING DYNASTY

China, 17th-18th century. Finely carved in openwork as two conjoined vases of flattened hexagonal gu form with flared mouths and bulbous midsections, rising from a swirling pond issuing lotus blossoms and leaves borne on slender stems. A pair of mandarin ducks encircle the vases, their plumage and eyes neatly incised, while two clambering chilong with bifurcated, scrolling tails coil above. The stone is of a deep celadon tone with cloudy inclusions.

Provenance: From an English private collection.
Condition: Good condition with some wear. Minuscule nibbling, a smoothened chip to the mouth rim of one vase, and natural fissures, some of which have developed into fine hairline cracks.

Weight: 505 g
Dimensions: Height 16.7 cm

Literature comparison:
Compare a related jade double square vase of a much later date, carved with chilong above waves, in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, object number B60J284.

Auction result comparison:
Type: Related
Auction: Bonhams London, 16 May 2013, lot 136
Price: GBP 10,000 or approx. EUR 18,500 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing
Description: A green jade lobed flaring vase, gu, 17th/18th century
Expert remark: Compare the related green stone, manner of carving, and chilong motif. Note the slightly larger size (20 cm) and that this is a single vase only. Also note the identical dating.
