The present carving is also known as ‘zao sheng guizi’ or ‘may you have children soon’. The peanut (Chin.: huasheng), is a symbol for longevity, good fortune, and fertility. The jujube, a Chinese red date, is often used in blessing for fertility, prosperity and good health. The Chinese word for jujube (Chin.: zao) is also a homophone to ‘early’ symbolizing early success or the early birth of a child. When combined together, they are symbolic for wishing for a safe and speedy childbirth.
