Description

AN UNUSUAL CIZHOU STEM CUP, MING DYNASTY

China, 14th-15th century. Sturdily potted, the flared sides rising from a tall spreading foot to an everted rim, covered in a creamy ivory-white glaze and finely painted with slightly irregular dark-brown bands of varying width, the lower half of the foot left unglazed revealing the buff ware.

Provenance: R & G McPherson Antiques, London, United Kingdom, 3 November 2005. Collection of Nicolas de la Mare Thompson, no. 249, acquired from the above and thence by descent. The base with an old label from R & G McPherson Antiques. A copy of Nicolas de la Mare Thompson’s notes on the present lot, confirming the provenance and dating above, accompanies this lot. In these notes, the collector suggests by comparison that the present lot could be Huozhou ware, “a northern variety of the more standard slip decorated stonewares associated with Cizhou kilns, [which] has been discovered by excavation to have been potted in Shaanxi Province”, and cites a similar example in the Palace Museum Beijing. Robert McPherson is an English dealer and highly regarded expert in Chinese ceramics, a committee member of the Oriental Ceramic Society, and on the board of ‘Asian Art in London’. Nicholas de la Mare Thompson (1928-2010) was an English book publisher and important collector of Chinese ceramics. He was the grandson of author Walter de la Mare, and his brother was the highly respected Chinese art expert Julian Thompson, who was Chairman of Sotheby's Asia from 1992 to 2003. Nicholas de la Mare Thompson came from a family of collectors that included Richard de la Mare, one of the founding directors of Faber and Faber. The distinguished collector Sir Michael Butler was one of his oldest and closest friends. They both started collecting pots at an early age and throughout their lives, he, Julian, and Nicolas would meet to compare and discuss their purchases. He was a committee member of the Oriental Ceramics Society, which he believed should be run for the benefit of every member and open to all.
Condition: Good condition with old wear and firing irregularities, minor kiln grit, encrustations, light scratches. The foot rim with two minor chips and associated old repairs.

Weight: 113 g
Dimensions: Height 8.3 cm

Literature comparison:
Only a small number of Cizhou stem cups have been preserved due to their delicate shape and tall foot. Compare a related Cizhou stem cup, dated 14th-15th century, 9 cm high, in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, accession number 1926-30-14.

Auction result comparison:
