Description

A FINE BLUE AND WHITE KOSOMETSUKE ‘PHOENIX AND QILIN’ DISH, 17TH CENTURY

China. The shallow dish rising from a tapering foot to an everted rim, finely painted in inky shades of cobalt blue to depict at the well a landscape with a qilin and phoenix amid flames and magic pearls, framed by scrolling lotus vines, and a band of key-fret below the rim. The exterior further decorated in cobalt blue with four stylized clouds and fine lines.

Provenance: From an important Irish private collection, acquired at A-Takeda, Saitama, Japan, on 15 June 2004. A copy of the invoice from A-Takeda, dated 15 June 2004, and confirming the dating above, accompanies the lot. A- Takeda specializes in Asian antiques, with a focus on Japanese studio ceramics dating to the Meiji to early Showa era, early Arita porcelain, and 17th-century Jingdezhen porcelains.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, firing irregularities including minor fritting along the upper rim, few tiny chips to the rim, some kiln grit along the foot, little warping, and pitting.

Weight: 370 g
Dimensions: Diameter 21.5 cm

Kosometsuke, literally ‘old blue and white’, refers to porcelains made specifically to cater to Japanese taste. With the growing demand for wares used in tea drinking and kaiseki meals during the tea ceremony, Chinese kilns developed new, irregular shapes and decorations. Kosometsuke porcelain was intentionally manufactured using poorly levigated clay and roughly potted, with inconsistencies or imperfections that appealed to Japanese collectors. Typical Kosometsuke wares are often slightly warped in shape and may bear rim “frits” from the manufacturing process, which were deliberately created. The glaze would frequently flake off the body of the piece, and the edges, known as mushikui, or ‘earthworm nibbles’, were particularly prized.
