Description

A MUGHAL-STYLE WHITE JADE ‘CRANES’ VASE AND COVER, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

China. Of flattened rectangular form with baluster sides supported on a tapering foot, rising to a waisted neck with a galleried rim surmounted by a bell-shaped cover topped with a large finial. The neck is flanked by a pair of openworked angular scroll handles. One side of the body is finely carved in low relief with a pair of cranes amid rockwork, scrolling vines, and drifting clouds beneath a full moon, the latter ingeniously highlighted by a russet vein in the stone to evoke a thread of ethereal moonlight.

The reverse is decorated with acanthus leaf scrolls repeated across the neck, short sides, and cover, the long sides of the cover centered with flowerheads. The translucent stone is of an even white tone with a few russet inclusions.

Provenance: A private collection in London, United Kingdom, acquired between the 1970s and 1990s, and thence by descent.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and slight nibbling to the edges. The stone shows natural fissures, some of which may extend into small hairline cracks. The highly translucent jade displays a fine overall polish, giving it a smooth and unctuous feel.

Weight: 192 g
Dimensions: Height 16.2 cm

The decorative elements on this vase recall the elaborate and complex designs found on Mughal jades which entered China in considerable numbers during the Qianlong reign as tributes and items of trade. Mughal jades were greatly admired by the emperor for their delicacy and extreme thinness, and subsequently, the Chinese jade lapidaries at the imperial workshops were influenced by this style. From as early as 1764, jade carvers were ordered specifically by Qianlong to make exact copies of these foreign jades, or to produce Chinese objects in Mughal style, as in the case of the present vase which encompasses both Mughal and Chinese design elements.
