Description

A SUPERB AND EXCEEDINGLY RARE LAPIS LAZULI SNUFF BOTTLE, 1770-1850

China. Finely carved in a flattened globular form, supported on a concave oval foot and rising to a short waisted neck with an everted rim and flat lip. The opaque stone is of exceptionally vibrant blue, unusually intense even for lapis lazuli, and attractively mottled with creamy gray and dark blue inclusions, together with a few very tiny flecks of mica. Well hollowed.

Expert’s Note: The Qianlong Emperor (r. 1736–1795) was renowned for his discerning eye in selecting the most sumptuous materials for the imperial collections. Among lapis lazuli, he favored only the deepest, most saturated blue stones, rejecting examples even when they were on slightly mottled with calcite or pyrite.
Following his successful campaigns in Central Asia, the Qing empire secured more reliable access to the famed lapis deposits of Badakhshan, ensuring a steady supply of the finest grades of this coveted material to the Imperial workshops. This Imperial taste established a standard that continues to shape collecting preferences to this day: the most intense blue varieties of lapis remain the most highly prized.

Provenance: This bottle comes from a collection that originates from a highly distinguished Taiwanese family and was assembled primarily during the 1980s and 1990s. Many of the snuff bottles in the collection were acquired in Hong Kong, with the majority believed to have been purchased through Christie’s and Sotheby’s during this period. While original receipts were not retained, possibly due to the sheer size of the collection, it is likely that several of these bottles can be traced in Sotheby’s and Christie’s catalogues from the 1980s and 1990s.
Condition: Good condition with minor wear, light scratches, small nibbles, and few old tiny chips to the rims. The stone with natural fissures, some of which have developed into thin hairline cracks.

Stopper: Coral
Weight: 90.4 g
Dimensions: Height including stopper 72 mm. Diameter neck 14 mm and mouth 8 mm.
