Description

A MINIATURE GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF A LAMA, TIBET, 15TH-16TH CENTURY

Expert’s note: The iconographical features of this small gilt-bronze figure of a lama evoke the historical Buddha’s moment of enlightenment, when the earth shook beneath his fingertips in recognition of his attainment. Seated upon a double-lotus base with a vajra placed just in front of his meditative posture, the figure portrayed is evidently a highly esteemed lama of an early period. The curved edge of the shirt suggests a date earlier than the 16th century, while the distinctive hairline can be found in bronzes of the 16th century. The exceptional quality and sharpness of the casting is evident in the finely beaded and incised hems of his patchwork robe and shirt.

Seated in dhyanasana atop a beaded double-lotus pedestal, his right hand lowered in bhumisparsha mudra and the left held in dhyana mudra above the lap, clad in monastic patchwork robes executed in meticulous beadwork with neatly incised hems. The serene face, with almond-shaped eyes and bow-shaped red lips forming a calm smile, is framed by black hair with a distinct widow’s peak.

Weight: 220 g
Dimensions: Height 7 cm

Provenance: From the Alain Presencer Collection. Alain Presencer (b. 1939) has devoted his life over the past fifty years to the study and promotion of Tibetan Buddhism and culture. His contributions to the field resulted in numerous recognitions, including his appointment as a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society. Alain also brought to the West his knowledge of the extraordinary and mystical religious music of the region. As a result, he produced a popular recording of his own performances, introducing this musical genre to a global audience with his album ‘The Singing Bowls of Tibet’, which has sold over a million copies to date.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities. Tiny nicks to the back, rubbing to ancient pigments and lacquer-gilt. With a fine, naturally grown patina. The base retains its original sealing plate, neatly engraved with a crossed vajra.
