Description

A LARGE (78 CM) INLAID BRONZE FIGURE OF WHITE TARA, NEPAL, 19TH–EARLY 20TH CENTURY

Exquisitely cast in four parts, the seven-eyed Tara is seated in padmasana on a double-lotus pedestal with a delicately beaded upper rim, her upturned soles and palms each bear an additional eye, her right hand lowered in varadamudra and her left raised in vitarkamudra, both holding lotus stems that bloom at her shoulders.
She wears a dhoti with finely rendered folds gathered below her feet, and her paneled crown, necklaces, and armbands are richly inlaid with turquoise, coral, and mother-of-pearl. Her serene face, with downcast eyes, sinuous brows framing a central urna, and pendulous earlobes, is crowned with hair neatly arranged in a high chignon.

Weight: 35.9 kg
Dimensions: Height 78 cm

Provenance: From a Danish private collection.
Condition: Good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities. Obvious nicks, some dents, warping, fatigue cracks, losses, surface scratches and losses to the inlays. A fine, naturally grown, dark patina.

Known for bestowing longevity, White Tara is actively worshipped in all schools of Tibetan Buddhism (second only in popularity to Avalokiteshvara) and is also found in Nyingma and Sarma tantric practices. Her seven eyes (three on her face, and one on each palm of her hands and feet) allow her to see beings in all realms of existence, while her facial expression conveys the utmost compassion for them. Although she shares the same hand mudras as Green Tara, the two deities can be differentiated by their posture, with White Tara seating cross-legged and Green Tara in royal ease.

Expert’s note: The present lot draws inspiration from the highly celebrated works of the 16th century created by Newar artists of Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley. For comparison, see a gilt-copper figure of Manjushri sold at Sotheby’s New York, 19 March 2018, lot 3038. Another related figure of Tara, likely originating from the same workshop, was in the collection of T. Christmas Humphreys Esq. Q.C., exhibited in The Tibetan Tradition, The Artist’s Own Gallery, December 1965, and published in Cintamani Kara, Indian Metal Sculpture, London, 1952, p. 14, no. 10.
