Description

A LARGE THANGKA DEPICTING YAMANTAKA VAJRABHAIRAVA WITH HIS CONSORT VAJRAVETALI, TIBET, 18TH CENTURY

Distemper on cloth. Finely painted to depict Vajrabhairava striding in alidhasana with Vajravetali in yab-yum, atop prostrating human figures on a lotus base. The three-headed deity embraces his consort with his primary arms while holding various war attributes, both enveloped in a flaming mandorla set against a verdant landscape with colorful swirling clouds beneath a dark sky. The upper register presents nimbate figures, including key transmission gurus, with Manjushri, the bodhisattva of wisdom, seated at the center, flanked by Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelug School, and other bodhisattvas bearing distinct attributes, symbolizing the lineage of Yamantaka practice. The lower register dominated by the wrathful deity Mahakala with six arms, accompanied by two additional guardians of the Dharma, each mounted on their respective vahanas.

Inscriptions: ‘Om Ah Hum’ to the back.

Provenance: From a private collection in Budapest, Hungary.
Condition: With expected wear, mild fading and browning, as well as light creasing with associated flaking to pigments and few loose threads along the edges.

Dimensions: 94.5 x 68.4 cm

The wrathful Vajrabhairava is a yidam, a deity that presides over the great tantras of the highest yoga in Tibetan Buddhism. A guardian and destroyer of death, he is represented here with thirty-four arms brandishing an array of weapons, while his sixteen legs trample birds, dogs, and Hindu gods including the elephant-headed Ganesha. He embraces his consort Vajravetali, an animated corpse, in a yab-yum sexual embrace that alludes to a dualistic totality encompassing compassion and wisdom.

Vajrabhairava is the wrathful form of Manjushri and a revered meditational deity in the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism, the dominant religious power in Tibet in the seventeenth century. Vajrabhairava also became a prominent Buddhist icon in China under the Qing emperors, who maintained direct links with the dignitaries of the Gelugpa sect, including the Dalai and Panchen Lamas. He is worshipped for frightening away egotism and selfishness, the root of suffering, and in this true form reveals the awesome and terrifying nature of enlightenment.
