Description

A RARE PAINTED WOOD PHURBA, TIBET, 17TH CENTURY

The ceremonial dagger is finely carved and lacquered in red, with a vajra-form handle framed by two endless knots and terminating in a pointed finial. The triple-sided blade is decorated at the top with c-scrolls.

Weight: 110 g
Dimensions: Length 25.5 cm

Provenance: A noted private collection in the Czech Republic.
Condition: Very good condition with expected old wear. Tiny nicks to the edges, a small chip to the middle knot, and obvious flaking to the lacquer.

Ritual utensils are the essential tools of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism practice, used to drive away the delusions that act as impediments to enlightenment. The phurba (Sanskrit: kila) dagger seen here was designed to symbolically consume the poisons of ignorance, greed, and delusion that impede spiritual progress. The phurba is the embodiment of the Vajrakila Buddha, who is empowered to suppress all evil in the world. Its ritual use is first described in the Vajrakilaya Tantra, a Vajrayana text dating to the eighth century or earlier.
