Description

AN UNUSUAL ROCK CRYSTAL VAJRA, LATE 18TH - EARLY 19TH CENTURY

Tibet or Nepal. Finely carved, the rounded four-pronged vajra with a central knob of ring form flanked by lotus petals encircling the central sphere and further bands, the prongs issuing from makara heads and terminating in pointed finials.

Height: 799 g
Dimensions: Length 21.5 cm

Provenance: A noted Private collection in the Czech Republic.
Condition: Good condition with some ancient wear, a small old repair, natural flaws to the material, the stone with inclusions and fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks.

While vajras are traditionally made of bronze, the present example is exceptionally carved from rock crystal, a highly unusual and precious material. The vajra, a symbol of indestructability and power, is one of the primary ritual symbols in Tibetan Buddhism. Derived from Sanskrit and translates to both thunderbolt and diamond, the vajra consists of two sets of prongs from which lotus petals emanate, flanking a central sphere. Often used in combination with a bell, which represents feminine wisdom, the vajra symbolizes the masculine attribute of skillful means or compassion.

Museum comparison:
Compare a related quartz vajra. Nepal, in the Guimet Museum, accession number MA 5212.
