Description

TWO FIGURATIVE BRONZE SEALS, WESTERN HAN TO WESTERN JIN DYNASTY

Published: Koos de Jong, Small China: Early Chinese Miniatures, 2021, p. 69, fig. 44.

China, 206 BC-316 AD. Comprising one in the form of a tortoise on a square seal, its head raised and the carapace finely incised, the second representing a bird with curved beak, pointed feathers, and upturned wings.

Inscriptions: Each seal face with an inscription: the tortoise seal engraved, ‘Da ting’ [‘Da pavilion’]; the bird seal cast in relief, ‘weiping’ [‘no peace yet’].

Provenance: Italian private collection, 2014. Collection of Dr. Koos de Jong, acquired from the above. A Dutch art historian and collector, Dr. Koos de Jong has worked across several cultural institutions in the Netherlands from 1976, serving as the director of the European Ceramic Work Center in Den Bosch between 1999-2009, before retiring in 2009. He has authored hundreds of articles and several books on Dutch fine and decorative arts from the Middle Ages to the modern era. His scholarly interests expanded to Chinese material culture, culminating in the 2013 publication of Dragon & Horse: Saddle Rugs and Other Horse Tack from China and Beyond, a pioneering study on Chinese equestrian gear. Continuing this line of inquiry, his more recent book published in 2021, Small China: Early Chinese Miniatures, explores the largely overlooked world of Chinese miniature objects, combining archaeological research with art historical insight.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, casting irregularities, and fine malachite and cuprite encrustations.

Weight: 18.2 g and 18 g
Dimensions: Height 1.9 cm and 1.8 cm

According to Gerard Tsang and Hugh Moss (Arts from the Scholar's Studio, 1986, cat. no. 125), 'Early seals were frequently of small size as before the invention of paper, when they were used to stamp clay impressions, they were carried at the belt as symbols of power as well as serving as identification and authentication'.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related seal with tortoise, dated to the 1st-2nd century, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 1994.605.13.
