Description

A VERY WELL-PRESERVED LIMESTONE FIGURE OF A BODHISATTVA, NORTHERN QI DYNASTY

Expert’s note:
It is unusual to find a late Qing carved and fitted double-lotus base preserved together with a sixth-century limestone figure of this size. Its survival alongside the sculpture strongly suggests that the piece was already valued by a discerning collector over a century ago. The careful custom fitting of the base, as well as the continuity of their pairing, indicates long-standing appreciation and careful stewardship, adding an additional layer of historical interest to the present lot.

China, 550-577. Superbly carved, standing barefoot on a rounded plinth atop a lotus base, holding an altar implement in his left hand. He wears a dhoti tied at the waist, with sashes and ribbons cascading to the knees, and a voluminous sanghati elegantly draped over the form, falling across the shoulder and down to the feet. The deity is adorned with foliate necklaces. His serene face is characterized by heavy-lidded, half-open eyes, softly arched brows, and bow-shaped lips with a prominent philtrum forming a subtle smile, flanked by pendulous earlobes. The hair cascades in rounded locks across the forehead, secured by a tasseled and jeweled diadem.

Provenance: From a French private collection.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Expected wear, signs of weathering and erosion, tiny nicks, scratches, losses, and remnants of ancient pigments. Surface encrustations, scattered age and fatigue cracks.

Weight: 49.8 kg
Dimensions: Height 98 cm (excl. base), 119.6 cm (incl. base)

With a carved and fitted double-lotus wood base, dating to circa 1900. (2)

The present figure displays several stylistic features typical of the Northern Chinese sculptural tradition dating to the second half of the sixth century, where emphasis was placed towards the volume of the body, evident here in the stocky upper body and the convexity of the stomach, and the folds of the robe, gently cascading towards the bottom of the body.

The Northern Qi dynasty was one of the most vibrant periods in the history of Chinese art, especially in the context of Buddhist art, which experienced a glorious moment following the contamination of foreign ideas and styles.

The elaborate strings of jewels depicted on the chest, consisting of lengths of pearls separated by coral twigs, can be traced to the Central Asian and Indian ornaments worn by Indian noblemen and can be found on Gandharan sculptures. See Kurita Isao, The World of the Buddha. Ghandara Art, Tokyo, 1990, vol. 2, p. 177, fig. 13.
