Tibetan-Chinese. Cast standing atop a lotus base, the three headed deity with six-arms holding a skull cup and two mongoose, and raising two hands in vitarka mudra and karana mudra. The heads surmounted by skull crowns framing his flaming hair, his face with a fierce expression, sharp fangs, bulging eyes and bushy brows.

Provenance: Austrian private collection, acquired in the French trade.
Condition: Good condition with some wear, revarnished, casting irregularities, repairs to extremities, and small losses.

Weight: 6.3 kg
Dimensions: Height 46.5 cm

The wrathful Hayagriva is a powerful deity in Vajrayana Buddhism, revered as a fierce manifestation of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Despite his terrifying appearance, flaming hair, bulging eyes, and bared fangs, Hayagriva embodies enlightened wrath, using forceful means to subdue obstacles and protect the Dharma.

The present figure follows the style of sculptures produced in the imperial workshops of the Dali Kingdom, dating to the 12th–13th century. For an earlier copper alloy figure of Mahakala, Dali Kingdom, dated to the late 12th century to 13th century, see Bonhams Hong Kong, 3 October 2017, lot 10.
