Description

? A RARE SILVER-INLAID BRONZE ‘BOAR‘ WEIGHT, WARRING STATES PERIOD-WESTERN HAN DYNASTY

China, 4th-1st century BC. Heavily cast, the boar modeled in a crouching pose with its head facing forward, the upturned snout flanked by two gently curved tusks, the short wispy tail curled upward, the body intricately inlaid in silver sheet and wire with geometric motifs. The bronze with a naturally grown, dark patina with vibrant malachite encrustations.

Provenance: A private collection in Somerset, United Kingdom, acquired in Hong Kong during the early 1990s and thence by descent. The private collection of a London doctor, acquired from the above.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Old wear, casting irregularities, scattered nicks and scratches, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations. Expected minuscule losses to inlays.

Weight: 223.4 g
Dimensions: Length 8.9 cm

Weights crafted from precious materials such as bronze and jade, often gilded or inlaid with gold, silver or gemstones, were produced in sets of four and served a practical function of anchoring down woven mats for seating. Mats and corner-weights were believed to have been used at banquets, even those laid out in tombs. Inlaid animal-form weights were discovered in the tomb of Dou Wan, consort of Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan (d. 113 BC), alongside food and wine vessels.

Literature comparison:
Bronze and precious metal animal forms were popular in the Eastern Zhou and Han periods, however examples shaped as a boar are exceedingly rare. Compare a closely related silver-inlaid bronze weight in the form of a recumbent ox, 10.9 cm long, dated to the Warring States period, in the Miho Museum, Shiga, illustrated by Eugene Y. Wang, ‘Crystallizing the 'Bleary Blur': Bronze Mat Weights and the Emergence of New Plastic Thinking in Western Han Dynasty’, A Bronze Menagerie: Mat Weights of Early China, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, 2006, p. 49, fig. 2.
