Expert’s note: The firing of copper-red glazes was notoriously difficult to control, often producing a mottled surface, a characteristic more commonly seen in porcelains of the Kangxi period. The soft, variegated tones of the glaze on the present bowl are reminiscent of the celebrated peachbloom wares of the Kangxi era.

The rich, even jihong glaze on the present bowl continues the tradition of red glazes developed during the Yuan and early Ming dynasties, particularly under the Hongwu and Xuande emperors. This monochrome underglaze-red, also known as ‘sacrificial red’, was revived in the Kangxi period under the Imperial kiln supervisor Lang Tingji (1663–1715). Copper-red glazes remained popular into the Yongzheng era. The Yongzheng Emperor took a personal interest in porcelain production, dissatisfied with the thinness of newly made red glazes, he sent five shards with thick sacrificial red from earlier wares to the kiln supervisor Nian Xiyao in 1729 as models for improvement.
