Description

A SANDSTONE FIGURE OF A FEMALE DEITY, ANGKOR PERIOD, BAYON STYLE, LATE 12TH-EARLY 13TH CENTURY

Expert’s Note: After further looking at this sculpture, the overall conception, style, and iconographic cues strongly support an attribution to Prajnaparamita. Although the figure is now missing its arms, the posture and remaining iconographic features correspond closely to known representations of the goddess from the late 12th to early 13th century. The serene, inwardly focused expression, the refined modeling of the torso, and the elegantly patterned sampot all align with the aesthetic characteristic of works produced during the reign of Jayavarman VII. In this period, Prajnaparamita occupied an especially elevated status in the Khmer court, where Jayavarman VII identified the deity with his own mother and commissioned a distinguished corpus of freestanding images in her likeness. See a sandstone figure of Prajnaparamita, late 12th-early 13th century, in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, accession number 97.105; and another figure of Prajnaparamita, Angkor period, late 1100s, formerly in the collection of the Denver Art Museum, accession number 2000.198.

Khmer Empire. Superbly carved in a sinuous outline with prominent breasts and a beautifully rounded belly, wearing a tightly fitted sampot resting low on the hips, incised with individual flower heads and held up with a floral-banded sash secured with a fishtail knot. The face with a serene expression, heavy-lidded sinuous eyes, and wide smiling lips, flanked by elongated earlobes, the hair piled up into a conical chignon centered by a diminutive figure of the Buddha Amitabha.

Provenance: From the private collection of Marie Louise Alexienne Vanleew (1929-2024), Belgium, and thence by direct descent to her grandson, the present owner of this lot.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Old wear, obvious losses, small chips, scattered nicks and scratches, signs of weathering and erosion, and encrustations.

Weight: 25.9 kg (excl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 82.5 (excl. stand), 86.5 (incl. stand)

Mounted on an associated stand. (2)

The figure’s garment consists of a skirt, with a large triangular fold in front, decorated with floral ornaments; it is held in place at the waist by a wide jeweled belt. Jean Boisselier, who refers to this long sampot as a sarong, describes it in these terms: "The sarong is no longer made of pleated material, but is decorated with florets familiar from the bas-reliefs of Angkor Wat. The downturned edge has practically disappeared, the borders are defined by a narrow braid, and the front flap is folded over on itself and extends to a triangular point, remarkably like a shark's fin.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related sandstone figure of Tara (?) kneeling, with a similarly incised sampot and dimunitive figure of Buddha Amitabha in the conical chignon, Bayon style, Angkor period, late 12th-early 13th century, 130 cm high, illustrated by Helen Ibbitson Jessup and Thierry Zephir, editors, Sculpture of Angkor and Ancient Cambodia - Millennium of Glory, Washington 1997, p. 304-305, no. 92.
