Description

? A LARGE INDO-PORTUGUESE MOTHER-OF-PEARL DISH, 17TH – 18TH CENTURY

India, Gujarat. Of circular, shallow, rounded form on a short foot, composed of geometric mother-of-pearl pieces forming a central round field in the shape of a flower head, with an outer band of radiating panels and square inlays along the rim.

Weight: 1,050 g
Dimensions: Diameter 29 cm

Provenance: A private collection in Rajasthan, India.
Condition: Good condition with typical wear and natural flaws to the mother-of-pearl inlays. Expected cracks, tiny nicks, and obvious losses to the inlays. Presenting well.

Due to their distinctly Western form, these dishes were initially regarded by 19th-century art historians as products of European manufacture. However, documentary and material evidence demonstrates that vessels of this type were produced in Gujarat and exported to Europe as early as the second quarter of the sixteenth century, as exemplified by a recorded example in the Green Vaults, Dresden. The Portuguese presence in India played a pivotal role in fostering the production of Gujarati mother-of-pearl objects, which were frequently commissioned for export to European markets. In certain instances, such dishes formed part of coordinated sets including larger mother-of-pearl ewers, as attested by two extant examples in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. no. 4282-1857).

Museum comparison:
Compare a related set of an Indo-Portuguese mother-of-pearl dish and ewer, dated to the early 17th century, 21.8 cm (diameter), in the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession number 4282-1857.
