Description

A RARE GOLD REPOUSSé VOTIVE PLAQUE OF VISHNU, THAILAND, MON-DVARAVATI PERIOD, SRI DEB STYLE, 7TH-8TH CENTURY

Thailand. Constructed of finely hammered gold, of rectangular form, to depict the four-armed Vishnu standing in tribhanga posture, as he leans on a club with his left hand, while the remaining hands hold his distinctive attributes. The figure is clad in a diaphanous sampot secured at the waist, with beaded jewelry draped over his legs, leaving his chest exposed. The face, with a hieratic expression, defined by elongated eyes, a broad nose, and full lips, crowned with a distinctive headdress and framed by a circular halo.

Alloy composition analysis: Gold, circa 15-16 karat. The plaque was tested by the Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum.

Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
Condition: Good condition with surface wear and manufacturing irregularities. Light warping. Minuscule holes around the figure. Scattered minor nicks, light surface scratches, and small dents. The gold surface with few darkened areas, mostly to the reverse.

Weight: 27.8 g
Dimensions: Height 11.6 cm

The early development of Buddhist and Hindu art in Southeast Asia was profoundly shaped by the artistic models of India during the Gupta period (c. 4th–6th centuries). This gold token represents the Hindu god Vishnu, distinguished by his flat-topped crown, four arms, and iconographic attributes, including the wheel, conch shell, club, and clod of earth. The figure exhibits the refined naturalism inherited from those early Gupta prototypes, observable in the subtle foreshortening of the right foot and the articulation of a dynamic posture reminiscent of the tribhanga, analogous to the Western concept of contrapposto. Such precious gold objects were customarily concealed beneath sacred stone icons in Thailand or Cambodia, serving to endow the temple with both material wealth and spiritual glory.
