Description

A BRONZE GHANTA, INDONESIA, 19TH-20TH CENTURY OR EVEN EARLIER

The domed bell of elegant plain design, the separately cast handle with a half-vajra finial neatly incised with foliate designs. The bell produces a clear, pure, and long-lasting sound when struck.

Provenance: French trade. Acquired from a private estate.
Condition: Very good condition with wear and casting irregularities. Scattered nicks and scratches, tiny dings, some warping, and signs of use. The ancient patina was professionally removed at some point, likely several decades ago. Since then, a new surface layer has developed, giving the piece a pleasing, unctuous feel overall.

Weight: 403.4 g
Dimensions: Height 18 cm

A vajraghanta is a bell with a handle in the shape of a vajra and is the most sacred of bells. The vajra seen at the top of the bell is similar to those found in Tibet and used by high-ranking priests. The great care taken with the production of Javanese bronze bells suggests they were highly important to religious life. They were produced in many forms, and the ringing of the bell invokes and summons the gods and calls worshippers to prayer. Javanese bells were used in both Hindu and Buddhist rituals.

The vajra represents the thunderbolt and the diamond. The thunderbolt harkens to the lightning strike experience of enlightenment of the historical Buddha while meditating under a bodhi tree, while the diamond indicates indestructibility. In combination with a bell, symbolic of the womb, the vajra bell signifies the indestructible rooting out of ignorance. The bell, with its hollow form, symbolizes wisdom acknowledging emptiness, while the clapper vocalizes the very sound of emptiness.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related bronze bell with clapper, Indonesia, dated to the 20th century, 43 cm high, in the collection of Música Para Ver: World Instruments.
