Description

A RARE JAVANESE GOLD LEAF FUNERARY MASK

Indonesia, probably 8th-9th century. Slightly convex in section, neatly hammered and embossed from a single thin sheet of gold, the face bearing a hieratic expression, with large almond-shaped eyes featuring boldly chased pupils, a slender nose, and full lips. The edges of the mask subtly flattened for support.

Provenance: Collection of Paolo Bertuzzi, thence by descent. Paolo Bertuzzi (1943-2022) was a fashion stylist from Bologna, Italy. He was the son of Enrichetta Bertuzzi, founder of Hettabretz, a noted Italian fashion company with customers such as the Rothschild family, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor. Paolo Bertuzzi later took over his mother’s business and designed exclusive pieces, some of which were exhibited in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA. He was also an avid collector of antiques for more than sixty years. His collection includes both archaic and contemporary art, and he edited two important books about Asian art, Goa Made - An Archaeological Discovery, about a large-scale archaeological project carried out with the Italian and Indonesian governments, and Majapahit, Masterpieces from a Forgotten Kingdom.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age, with surface wear, manufacturing irregularities, and typical signs of burial. Light warping with few dents of varying sizes, as is to be expected due to the malleability of gold. Minor creasing with small associated tears. Few minute nicks and shallow surface scratches.

Weight: 28.6 g
Dimensions: Length 13.4 cm

Gold funerary masks, discovered in ancient burial sites across Java, played a significant ritual role in guiding the deceased into the afterlife. These masks were carefully sewn onto the funerary shrouds, serving as both protective and symbolic objects, believed to aid the spirit's journey beyond death. Their presence in these graves highlights the importance of funerary customs and the belief in an afterlife in ancient Javanese culture.
