Description

? A RARE BRONZE FIGURE OF THE STANDING SHIVA WITH HIS TRIDENT, 8TH–10TH CENTURY

Scientific Analysis Report: A physical-chemical study of the present lot has been performed by Adamantio srl, an Academic Spin-Off of the University of Turin, based on two samples taken on 15 June 2022, using electron microscope images and SEM scanning coupled with EDSa microprobe analyses, with the result consistent with the dating above. A copy of the detailed technical report, dated 6 October 2022, no. 43/2022, accompanies this lot.

Southeast Asia or Northern India. Finely cast as a four-armed Hindu deity, standing erect upon a square lotus pedestal with a beaded band. The principal right hand is raised holding an hourglass-shaped drum, while the lower right hand grasps a long spear and the left holds a bowl with prayer beads. The figure is adorned with a short necklace, armlets, and a sacred thread. The serene face, flanked by elongated earlobes and surmounted by an elaborate headdress, is backed by a large circular aureole.

Provenance: From an important private collection in London, United Kingdom.
Condition: Very good condition with expected wear and casting irregularities. Tiny nicks, and few dents, traces of weathering, encrustations, minor areas of corrosion and surface scratches. A fine, naturally grown, dark patina.

Weight: 3,871 g (excl. stand), 5,698 g (incl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 35.5 cm (excl. stand), 38 cm (incl. stand)

With a fitted metal stand. (2)

Expert’s note: The present lot is a highly unusual example, representing a Hindu rather than a Buddhist image, remarkable given that the vast majority of bronzes discovered in Sumatra are associated with Buddhist traditions. It appears to be an early missionary bronze originating from Northern India, predating the region’s more pronounced Buddhist phase. Stylistically, the sculpture shows strong affinities with North Indian prototypes: the cord or robe draped over the upper arms and falling in front of the thighs reflects a convention prevalent in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh, but otherwise unknown in Sumatran bronzes. Comparable treatment of drapery can be observed in Indian bronzes in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (accession number 2015.500.4.10) and the Art Institute of Chicago (reference number 2021.232). The modeling of the hair and facial features further supports this attribution, revealing close stylistic parallels with works from these regions.

Museum comparison:
Compare an Indian green chlorite figure of Vishnu related features, dated to the 8th-9th century, dated to 701-900 AD, 24.4 cm (high), in the Art Institute Chicago, reference number 2021.232. Compare a related Indian bronze figure of Vishnu with similar face features, dated to the early 9th century, 52.7 cm (high), in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 2015.500.4.10.
