Description

A SMALL BRONZE FIGURE OF THE EMACIATED BUDDHA, RATTANAKOSIN PERIOD

Thailand, 19th century. Finely cast, seated in dhyanasana upon a semicircular pedestal fronted by a vajra, the hands rest lowered in dhyana mudra upon the lap. Dressed in a long pleated dhoti echoing his emaciated rib cage, and a similarly incised shawl draped over the arms and legs. The face bearing a serene and contemplative expression, characterized by heavy-lidded downcast eyes, gently arched brows, and full lips gently curved into an enigmatic smile. The hair piled up over the domed ushnihsa, backed by a circular halo incised with lotus petals.

Provenance: From a long-established dealer based in London, United Kingdom.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. With expected ancient wear from worship and handling, casting irregularities, traces of weathering, and encrustations. Few minuscule nicks and light dents. The bronze with a fine, naturally grown patina, verdigris visible to the interior.

Weight: 172.3 g
Dimensions: Height 8.7 cm

At the age of 29, Siddhartha renounced the comforts of his palace in pursuit of spiritual insight and solace. He severed his hair and discarded his jewelry as symbols of renunciation. In his quest for enlightenment, he experimented with fasting to test his resolve, though physical hunger ultimately impeded his meditation. He would later advocate the principle of ‘The Middle Path’, a doctrine that rejects extremes in favor of balanced focus on the attainment of enlightenment. Depictions of the fasting Siddhartha embody this philosophy of moderation.

The motif of the ascetic Siddhartha gained prominence in Thailand during the nineteenth century, likely influenced by photographic documentation of ancient Gandharan sculptures discovered in Pakistan, such as the famous statue now in the Lahore Museum. Echoing their historical precedents, Thai representations emphasize prominent veins and depict wavy hair rather than tight curls.
