Description

A FINE PAIR OF EMBOSSED SILVER BOWLS, BURMA, 19TH CENTURY

Each vessel of alms bowl form, embossed to the sides with eight cartouches enclosing animals and mythical beasts from the Ramayana, including elephants, tigers, and garudas. The rims enclosed by rows of petals, one base with a stylized blossom, the other decorated with a peacock.

Provenance: Austrian private collection, acquired from the German trade.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, small dents, and few tiny cracks around the rim.

Weight: 242 g and 209 g
Dimensions: Diameter 12.5 cm and 12 cm, Height 8.2 cm and 7.3 cm

The shape of the present bowls is said to derive from Burmese monks’ alms bowls, known as thabeik, one of the eight possessions permitted for monks. However, Burmese monks are prohibited from touching gold or silver. Thus, these types of bowls had a decorative rather than a religious purpose.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related Burmese silver bowl, dated late 19th to early 20th century, 18 cm diameter, in the British Museum, registration number As1952,04.1.
