Description

A FINE TERRACOTTA VOTIVE PLAQUE WITH BUDDHA, BURMA, 14TH-15TH CENTURY

Expert’s note: Terracotta plaques representing the Buddha surrounded by smaller Buddhas and depicting scenes from the Buddha’s life became prevalent during the Pagan period and continued to be produced until the 15th century. Two closely related examples with similar iconography are preserved in the British Museum, registration numbers 1886,0618.8 and 1886,0618.9, attesting to a dating to the 14th-15th century.

Of arched form with a flat base, this finely impressed terracotta votive plaque depicts the Buddha seated in bhumisparsha mudra (the gesture of enlightenment) on a double-lotus throne within an arched shrine topped by a parasol. Branches of the Bodhi tree emerge above the shrine, while flowing streamers rise from the parasol. The central Buddha is surrounded by four smaller Buddhas, also seated in bhumisparsha mudra, all framed by a beaded border, and a single-line inscription runs along the base of the throne.

Weight: 566 g
Dimensions: Height 13.6 cm

Provenance: Renzo Freschi, Milan, Italy. A noted private collection in the Czech Republic, acquired from the above.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Expected wear, obvious losses, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, smoothened chips, small nicks, remnants of pigments to the back.

Buddhist terracotta votive plaques or tablets have been unearthed from Bodhgaya in Bihar to Pagan in Burma, as well as in Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia. The practice of pressing clay into molds to produce devotional plaques, often so deeply impressed as to create miniature shrines, originated in Bodhgaya, the sacred site of the Buddha’s enlightenment. Their iconography, dominated by the Great Illumination, reflects the refined aesthetic of the Pala period in Bihar and Bengal.

Museum comparison:
Compare two closely related Burmese votive plaque, dated to the 14th-15th century, 13.5 cm (high), in the British Museum, registration number 1886,0618.8 and 1886,0618.9. Compare a related but earlier Burmese votive placque depicting scenes from the life of Buddha, dated to the 12th century, 16.1 cm (high), in the Museum for Asian Art, Berlin, identification number GIAK 8.
