Description

A RARE POLYCHROME EARTHENWARE ‘LION’ JAR, INDUS VALLEY CIVILIZATION, NAL CULTURE

Pakistan, Baluchistan, c. 3100-2700 BC. Of biconical form, rising from a flat foot to a short neck fitted with a constricting mouth, the body boldly decorated with a polychrome frieze depicting a pair of recumbent lions facing each other, alongside a single lion standing foursquare. Their bodies painted in ochre yellow, with manes distinctively rendered in shades of red and blue, complemented by surrounding geometric motifs in the same colors. The bottom of the vessel unpainted, revealing the natural buff ceramic color underneath.

Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age, with ancient wear and expected firing irregularities. Some touchups. A small chip to the mouth and few minor nicks. Rubbing and flaking to pigments, as is to be expected from this type of wares. The surface with some areas of soil encrustation, mostly to the interior, indicating a prolonged period of burial.

Weight: 346.9 g
Dimensions: Height 7.6 cm, Diameter 12.2 cm

Nal-style pottery is characterized by a diverse range of painted motifs consisting of animals, plants, and geometric motifs in vivid colors. Animal motifs encompass fish, birds, humped bulls, and griffins, while plant motifs are represented by pipal leaves and trees with multiple leaves. Geometric designs consist of various stepped patterns, and they are systematically arranged in registers or panels, delineated by parallel lines. The forms of Nal ceramics are equally distinctive, including cylindrical bowls, truncated biconical pots, and vessels with cylindrical bodies and constricted mouths.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related jar with birds and geometric motifs, Baluchistan, Nal culture, 16.7 cm diameter, illustrated in Akinori Uesugi, Ceramics and Terracotta Figurines from Balochistan of the Katolec Collection, 2017, p. 58, no. 96. For comparable schematic depictions of recumbent animals with geometric patterns, and a comprehensive study of their development and variations, see Richard Tarr, Indus Valley Painted Pottery, 1873, p. 76, no. 157-161.
