Description

A POLYCHROME EARTHENWARE ‘BIRD’ JAR, INDUS VALLEY CIVILIZATION, NAL CULTURE

Pakistan, Baluchistan, c. 3100-2700 BC. Of conical form, with deep walls supported on a short circular foot and rising to a wide mouth, the body neatly decorated with a polychrome frieze depicting an arrangement of highly stylized stags, their elongated necks rendered in reddish tones outlined in black, with extended muzzles and long, curved horns. The composition framed above and below by a double-line border, while the ground of the vessel remains unpainted, revealing the natural buff ceramic color underneath.

Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age, with ancient wear and expected firing irregularities, including a small fissure. Few minor nicks, light surface scratches, and minute chips, mostly around the rim. Some touchups. Rubbing and flaking to pigments, as is to be expected from this type of wares. The surface with some areas of soil encrustation.

Weight: 215.2 g
Dimensions: Height 10.3 cm, Diameter 10.7 cm

Nal-style pottery is characterized by a diverse range of painted motifs consisting of animals, plants, and geometric motifs in vivid colors. Animal motifs encompass fish, birds, humped bulls, and griffins, while plant motifs are represented by pipal leaves and trees with multiple leaves. Geometric designs consist of various stepped patterns, and they are systematically arranged in registers or panels, delineated by parallel lines. The forms of Nal ceramics are equally distinctive, including cylindrical bowls, truncated biconical pots, and vessels with cylindrical bodies and constricted mouths.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related jar with animal motifs with similarly rendered eyes and framed by double lines, Baluchistan, Nal culture, 11.2 cm diameter, illustrated in Akinori Uesugi, Ceramics and Terracotta Figurines from Baluchistan of the Katolec Collection, 2017, p. 13, no. 12.
